A couple shares their struggles and triumphs during surrogacy, highlighting the emotional toll and the changes that ultimately strengthened their marriage.

From an outsider's perspective, my marriage to Ethan appeared to be rock-solid, a status we maintained for 24 years. However, the reality of our journey through surrogacy told a different story. After experiencing a stillbirth during our first surrogacy attempt, I felt an unsettling disconnection between us, despite what friends and family thought. Months passed where we hardly seemed to intersect, often feeling more like two people just sharing a space than a couple.
The years leading up to our surrogacy decision were loaded with challenges—battling my endometriosis and adenomyosis severely impacted our lives, causing a strain on our intimacy and my career. Burdened by endless medical interventions, including failed IVF attempts, I couldn't shake the feeling that my condition had driven a wedge between us, decimating the dreams of parenthood we had envisioned together.
Choosing surrogacy was a move spurred by compromise. I had long harbored doubts about motherhood. Yet there lingered a curiosity about co-parenting with Ethan. After significant health struggles, including an early onset of menopause, I opted for a hysterectomy, while Ethan remained steadfast in his desire to become a father. Our choice of surrogacy came across as the "easy way out" to some, but to us, it was a hopeful path forward. Initial freedom quickly morphed into unexpected turmoil as the reality of our decisions sank in.
Three Missteps That Almost Ended Our Marriage
Ignoring Early Warning Signs
Amidst our uncertainty, we relied heavily on an agency that would turn out to be anything but trustworthy. Clueless about their past fraudulent activities, we placed ourselves in their hands, relinquishing control over both our emotions and finances. The obvious red flags, such as inflated reimbursements and the surrogate's unpredictable mood swings, became a backdrop to our shared silence. Had we vocalized our concerns sooner, we might have altered our course before resentment buried us.
During critical moments like second-trimester ultrasounds, I found myself grappling with unvoiced fears. Ethan's carefree demeanor felt like an affront as I internally battled doubt and sadness. Our surrogate's fluctuating boundaries left us in a state of confusion, trapped between excitement and apprehension. Instead of navigating these emotional mazes together, I isolated myself, struggling to breathe under the weight of my unarticulated fears.
Asymmetrical Burden Sharing
The imbalance in our responsibilities became all too apparent during the surrogacy process. While I took the helm for most interactions with our surrogate and managed the legal ins and outs of our agreement, Ethan remained an aloof bystander. His intention had been supportive; however, the reality was that my heavy load only amplified my stress. I resented the added pressure of navigating the surrogacy landscape alone when we should've been a unified front.
Divergent Grieving Processes
Grief manifested differently for each of us, culminating in our most profound clash. I sought to confront and reconcile painful truths, while Ethan tended to compartmentalize his emotions. My desire to linger with our stillborn baby in the hospital conflicted with his instinct to step away, creating an emotional rift between us. Though both responses were valid, they perpetuated a sense of disconnection and misunderstanding.
As time dragged on, my frustration began to spiral. With no avenues for understanding our loss and silence about our pain, isolation became unbearable. The facade of our “strong couple” image cracked, and with it came a level of conflict we hadn’t experienced in decades.
Three Transformative Shifts That Strengthened Our Bond
Building a True Partnership
Our next surrogacy attempt introduced us to a new agency that emphasized transparency and teamwork. This time, our surrogate actively invited us to be part of the process, sharing both the challenges and joys of her experience. We coalesced into a true trio, fighting the urge to retreat into the shadows of our previous frustrations. Together, we embraced a newfound intimacy that transcended expectations.
Ethan stepped into his role more fully, participating in conversations and decision-making. His willingness to engage transformed our dynamic, easing the burden I had previously carried alone.
Sharing Grief
When our second surrogate experienced a loss of her own, we grieved as a united front. The physical closeness of our trio brought forth healing in unexpected ways. We communicated more openly about our emotions. When I needed support, Ethan was present, and, in turn, I sought to understand his need for social engagements as an outlet. We began to share external struggles with family and friends, acknowledging our challenges rather than hiding them.
We also made a conscious effort to set boundaries around discussions of surrogacy, preserving our mental health by carving out moments away from the weight of grief. Humor emerged as a coping mechanism, allowing us to find levity in dark moments: whispers of “file it under never!” during conversations about our lost child helped absorb some of the sting.
Reclaiming Identity Beyond Grief
Understanding that surrogacy and its accompanying hardships didn’t define us allowed us to reclaim our individuality. We made it essential to cherish what we loved about our time together before these experiences enveloped every conversation. Planning getaways and everyday pleasures helped reinvigorate our spirits, paving a pathway back to our original selves.
Ultimately, caring for our present was pivotal, keeping a focus on little moments like sharing a meal or walking hand-in-hand. As we weigh the possibility of continuing our surrogacy journey, we often pause to realign ourselves through simple gestures of affection, ensuring that we remain anchored in the love that brought us together in the first place.
Surrogacy fundamentally changed how we engage with one another. While many might have viewed it as an easier path, the emotional trials we faced forced us to navigate an unfamiliar landscape within our marriage. I recognize that we may not be equipped to handle every new challenge that arises, but I do believe we have cultivated the skills to find our way back to each other amidst adversity.
